Heat Protectant for Hair

The Importance of Heat Protectant for Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are the perfect way to achieve the long, beautiful, healthy looking hair you or your clients have always dreamed of. Heated styling tools give us the ability to create desirable curls, natural waves or sleek straight locks, however, if you don’t use heat protectant for hair extensions, you can reduce their longevity and quality. In this blog post, I’m sharing the importance of heat protectant for hair extensions, the right temperature for your heated styling tools and my tips for expert hair care because you deserve gorgeous locks. Keep reading to learn more!

Hair Extensions

At OC Extension Styles in Costa Mesa, Nicole offers hand-tied hair extension services with a consultation to assess your natural hair, desired length and volume. The right method and maintenance plan depend on your hair density, condition and daily routine. Caring for your extensions between appointments is an important part of that plan.

Heat Protectant for Hair Extensions

Human hair extensions need gentle care when you use heated styling tools. Choose a heat protectant suitable for your extensions and follow the product instructions for application and drying. Heat protectant can help reduce heat damage, but it does not make hair damage-proof. Ask Nicole which products and styling routine suit your installation at your next appointment.

Use your recommended heat protectant each time you heat style, and avoid repeated passes over the same section. Product demonstrations do not replace the care instructions for your particular extensions.

Styling Tools

If you like to style your hair and hair extensions with heated styling tools like a hair dryer, straightener or curling wand, it’s well worth the investment to purchase professional tools. We recommend opting for a ceramic or tourmaline straightener and curling wand as the plates and barrel will ensure that heat is distributed evenly, preventing snapping caused by uneven hot spots. The temperature on your straightener or curling wand should not exceed 360F, and preferably use one of the low to medium heat settings. It may take a little longer to style your hair, however, this will protect your hair from burning and maintain the quality of your extensions. I’m sure this goes without saying, but make sure your hair is completely dry before using heated tools like a straightener or curling wand. If your hair is even a bit damp, it will sizzle which will crack and split your cuticles which will result in breakage or damage to your hair and hair extensions – we want to avoid that at all costs!

When it comes to your hair dryer, ionic is best. It helps to dry your hair faster which means less exposure to heat and therefore less damage, hooray! Alongside your heated styling tools, having a great hairbrush is also important not only to protect your hair from breakage, but to set the stage for superior styling. A hairbrush with flexible bristles will easily untangle wet or dry hair gently without pulling or tugging on your hair or hair extensions. Having smooth tangle free hair will also benefit you in the styling stage as your hair will glide through your straightener or curling wand without getting caught, making the process a whole lot faster and safer.

How to Maintain Longevity

It can be a common routine to wash our hair, then straight away blow dry it and style with heated styling tools. Even with the use of heat protectant, this is a lot of heat in a short amount of time. When you can, let your hair air dry. This is especially important for your hair extensions as they don’t receive the same nourishing oils your natural hair does from your scalp, making them more prone to dryness. To maintain the longevity of your hair extensions, skip styling them a few times per week, you can always try a cool braid or up style for some variation. Another one of my tips is to sleep on a silk pillowcase. Cotton pillowcases grab and twist hair in our sleep which can result in bedhead by the morning. Silk pillowcases protect your hair and hair extensions from damage and will also maintain your hair style for longer – yes please.

Our premium hair extensions give you the freedom to have the hair of your dreams and with some care and maintenance, you can ensure their longevity and that they remain healthy and strong.
